Highways Electrician / Service Operative Apprenticeship

Introduction

This Apprenticeship is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge to work a range of highways electrical equipment.

Focused on the repair and maintenance of street lighting and road signage, apprentices will gain the necessary knowledge and experience to repair and maintain a range of systems. This will be supported with a good understanding of electrical principles, and safe methods of working.

What will the apprenticeship involve?

The main duties of a competent Highways Electrician / Service Operative within the relevant sub-sector(s) are:

To install, maintain (including fault diagnosis and repairs), inspect, and test low voltage highway electrical equipment and systems (e.g. street lighting, traffic signals, safety cameras)

To carry out emergency attendance and emergency works (e.g. If a car has hit a streetlight)

To ensure work is carried out efficiently, effectively and safely

To maintain effective working relationships

To work on their own initiative, as well as in teams; supervising the work of other team members

What you will study:

Students will learn to: 

  • Understand and identify the principles of operation, the different types of equipment and systems used in the highway electrical sector, and how they are installed and maintained.
  • Utilise and perform installation techniques. This includes an understanding of how to install, how to perform an installation, and connecting a range of highway electrical equipment and components (e.g. cables, fuses, distribution boards.)
  •  Understand and adapt to varying site conditions.
  •  Understand and carry out the relevant electrical and functional tests for installed equipment and completing records (e.g. job sheets and electrical test certificates.)
  • English and Maths qualifications are an essential element of your Further Education and Apprenticeship training.

Courses Available

Highways Electrician / Service Operative Apprenticeship

Level 3 Apprenticeship

Location: TUCA - London.

Duration: The typical duration of this Apprenticeship is 24 months

Entry requirements: 5 x GCSE including Maths and English C+ or candidates will have completed the Level 2 Highway Electrical Maintenance & Installation operative apprenticeship.

Qualifications: This is a Level 3 Apprenticeship and will result at the end of the Apprenticeship, in gaining a Level 3 Certificate and a Level 3 NVQ Diploma
